Can AI build your website, and what are you left with a year later?

Yes, AI can build your website, and it can do it in an afternoon. Whether that was a good decision is not settled by how the site looks when you publish it, but by who controls it a year later, when the subscription comes up for renewal.

A finished website drawn as a solid browser window, and beside it the same window as an empty outline: the working copy you could carry to another company.
A site you can log in to is not the same as a copy you can take with you.

Can AI build my website, and what am I actually choosing?

What you are choosing between is a website you own and access to a website somebody else runs. An AI website builder gives you the second, a hand-built site the first. Both can look identical on a phone screen, which is why the difference takes a year to show up.

When you describe a business to a builder and press generate, it assembles a site from patterns it has seen before, stores it on its own computers, and serves it from its own account. You get a login. What you usually do not get is a folder of files you can carry somewhere else.

When is an AI website the right choice for a business?

For some businesses the generated site is genuinely the better decision. Recognise yourself here and it is probably the right one.

  • You need something online this week, and it is a placeholder while you work out what the business is.
  • The site is one page that says what you do and how to reach you. Nothing on it takes a booking or a payment.
  • You are testing whether an idea has customers, and you would rather not spend $680 finding out.
  • You expect to replace it within a year, because the business will change shape.

In all four cases the site is disposable by design. Nothing about it needs to survive the next two years, so nothing about it needs to be owned.

When is an AI website the wrong choice?

The answer flips the moment the site has to do work you cannot redo in an afternoon.

  • Customers book, pay or order through it, and a booking history is not something to rebuild.
  • It runs in Arabic as well as English, with the layout mirrored properly.
  • It has to be fast on a phone on a weak mobile connection, not only on your laptop.
  • Someone other than you will edit it, now or later.

If two or more of those are true, the generated version is not a cheaper website. It is a smaller thing that will have to be replaced. Our own answer to those four is a build where the web address is registered in your name from the start, and the code and the hosting account, the place the site is stored and served from, move into your name at handover. That is what custom web design means here.

What are you left with a year later?

Four questions decide it. Each has an answer you can check before you pay, and none of them is about how the site looks.

Where does an AI-built website actually live?

A generated site lives on the builder’s own computers, under the builder’s account. You have access to it, not possession of it.

The test takes a minute. Ask where the files would go if you wanted to move the site to a different company tomorrow. If the tool exports a working copy, you have something closer to ownership than most. If the site only runs inside the builder, or the export produces a snapshot with no forms and no checkout, you have a tenancy. That is fine as long as you know it.

A site we build moves onto a hosting account in your name at handover, with the code alongside it. Moving it after that means putting the files somewhere else and pointing the web address at them, with no permission needed from anyone.

Who controls your web address?

The web address, the part people type, is separate from the site. It is rented by the year from a company allowed to register web addresses, and the registration is recorded in somebody’s name. Whoever is named there controls the address.

Many builder plans include the address as part of the subscription, managed from the builder’s account. It works while you pay. It becomes a question the day you want to leave: if the registration is in your name, the address can move with you, and if it is in someone else’s, it is not yours to move. Open the account where the address is managed and see whose name is on it. Every build here registers the address in the client’s name from the start.

Who owns your website when your designer disappears walks through how to check this, and what can still be recovered if the answer is not what you hoped.

Who else can edit an AI-built website?

A generated site is edited through the builder, by whoever holds the login. The instructions you typed to generate it are not a document anyone can work from. There is no blueprint explaining why the page is arranged the way it is, or what was left out.

A year later that matters, because whoever typed those instructions may have moved on and the next person has to work it out from the outside. On a small site that is an afternoon. On a site with bookings, product variants or Arabic, it is closer to starting again.

What happens if the subscription stops?

This is the part that decides the real cost. A monthly website charge can pay for three different things: keeping the site online, someone keeping it working, or renting the site itself. A builder subscription is usually the third, with the first bundled in. Pay monthly or pay once for a website separates the three, and what each leaves you with when the payments stop.

Hosting and maintenance can end without taking the website away from you, as long as you hold a copy you can put somewhere else. A rental is different: when it ends, the site stays with the system it was built on. Whether you still have anything you can move is the question to ask before you pay, not after.

Does Google rank an AI-built website lower?

No, and this is worth stating plainly because a lot of people believe the opposite. Google’s guidance on AI-generated content, published in 2023, says it looks at the quality of content rather than how it was produced. What it ranks down is pages mass-produced to manipulate results, which its own spam policies describe as scaled content abuse.

What a generated site does not get is credit for being original, tested or specific. Google’s guidance on helpful content puts the bar at whether a page gives a reader something they cannot get elsewhere. A generated site can clear that bar on a simple subject and miss it on a hard one.

What does the price of a website actually buy?

A common belief is that a website costs what it costs because building it is expensive. That was true when building it was most of the work. It is not true now, and a generated site is the proof.

What the money buys today is the decisions and the checks. Which pages the business needs. What happens when the form is submitted at eleven at night. Whether the checkout still works when the connection drops. Whether the Arabic layout mirrors properly on a small Android phone.

Our plans start at $680 for a one-page site, $1,460 for a business website and $2,840 for an online store, with the exact figure agreed in writing before anything starts. Our website pricing sets out what each plan covers, and why websites cost what they cost goes through what actually moves the number.

So should you use AI to build your website?

Here is the rule: if the site is a thing you will throw away, let the AI build it. If it is a thing you will have to keep, do not.

That is not a defence of our trade. It is the same rule you would apply to a market stall against a shop. A stall you can pack up in an hour is fine for testing a product. A shop you plan to trade from for years is not something you want to discover you were only renting.

Common questions

Can AI build my website for free?

Some builders have a free tier, and most charge for a custom web address or for removing the builder’s name. Free is usually a trial, not ownership.

Is an AI website good enough for a business?

For a single page that describes what you do and how to reach you, it can be. For a site that takes bookings, sells products or runs in Arabic, it is usually temporary.

Do I still need a web designer if I use AI?

Not for the assembling of pages. Yes for the decisions: which pages the business needs, what the site should ask a visitor to do, and how it behaves in Arabic on a slow phone.

Can I move an AI-built website somewhere else later?

Sometimes. It depends on whether the tool exports a working copy or only a snapshot, and whether the web address is registered in your name or the builder’s.
